Extend RSE to 18

13 June 2025

There is growing support for extending Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) to young people up to the age of 18, with 105,000 signatories backing this change via a petition started by Faustine Petron, founder of Make it Mandatory.

Currently, RSE is not mandatory for 16-18 despite this age group being disproportionately impacted by domestic abuse. An amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill could change legislation so that RSE is provided for all young people up to the age of 18 attending further education institutions. The amendment will be debated in the House of Lords in June 2025.

This is a common-sense move to give young people the education they want and need at a time when many will be having their first sexual and romantic relationships.
