Sex Education Forum partners with Make It Mandatory

15 January 2024

Sex Education Forum and youth-led organization Make it Mandatory are delighted to announce the formation of a brand new partnership for 2024. Our collaboration aims to improve, include and extend relationships and sex education (RSE) with and for young people.

The new partnership builds on our ambition to put young people at the centre of work on RSE.

Make it Mandatory is a group of friends, who formed a grassroots social action group built around a RSE campaign objective from founder Faustine Petron, calling for RSE to be extended to ages 16-19 and to include teaching about domestic abuse.

The impact of Make it Mandatory so far

In 2022, Make it Mandatory ran an incredibly successful change.org petition, calling for the extension of RSE post-16 and amassed over 95,000 signatories. In 2023, Make it Mandatory engaged with parliamentarians and secured the support of over 50 organisations and the Women and Equalities Select Committee to back their campaign for mandatory RSE in post-16 education.

Sex Education Forum is the leading national charity for RSE, convening over 75 partner organisations working together for inclusive, high-quality provision for all children and young people.

Together we will campaign for young people’s voices to be heard in the RSHE review

Our formal partnership reflects our joint commitment to allocating time, energy and resource to sharing our respective RSE expertise, influence and reach in ways that can support each organisation to better achieve our objectives. This is timely as young people’s voices have been absent from the Government Review of RSHE in 2023, and this is something that our supporters and wider partners are determined to see change in 2024.

Make it Mandatory founder, Faustine Petron said: “I am really excited for what this partnership will bring. I look forward to all the further positive changes we can make collaboratively to improve RSE for the next generation”.

Sex Education Forum CEO, Lucy Emmerson, said: “I’m delighted to announce our partnership with youth organization, Make it Mandatory, and full of hope for how our joint expertise will amplify collective effort to improve RSE in 2024 and beyond”
