Educator Competencies Research

Sex Education Forum is working with the PSHE Association, University of Exeter and University of Lincoln to develop a set of key competencies specific to teaching Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), including Relationships and Sex Education (RSE).

We hope that teachers will be able to use these to identify areas in which they may need training/support, as well as areas of strength which may be recognised within their wider careers.  Our intention is for this tool to contribute to greater teacher confidence in PSHE/RSE; we hope it will also help us advocate for better training provision and funding as a sector.

We need input from PSHE teachers, visiting educators and students (aged 16-19) about the draft tool we’ve made.

We want to find out:

  • From teachers and visiting educators:  how useful they think this tool will be and how we can make it more so.
  • From students:  what they most value in a PSHE teacher, so we can be sure we emphasise development of these attributes in our tool.

Do you think your school might have teachers (who teach PSHE) or students (aged 16-19), or are you a visiting educator who can find 10 minutes to read a short document and complete a questionnaire about it?

Can they do this by 2 July 2026? If so, please share the 'How to take part' information below with them.

How to take part

Step One: At the bottom of this page is a downloadable 'Competencies Document' that lists the competencies and briefly describes how we hope they will be used. Please ensure that you have read this document before you click on the link below to complete the questionnaire.

Step Two: The link below will take you to a questionnaire that will ask you some questions about the 'Competencies Document' and how useful you think it will be in its current form, as well as any suggestions you may have about how to make it more useful:
