Developing Expert Practice Level Course:
This one‑day course supports experienced RSE and PSHE teachers to deepen their practice and apply trauma-aware thinking to real classroom situations. It focuses on how to plan and teach sensitive topics with care, clarity and confidence to all learners, while keeping safeguarding and inclusion at the centre of RSE delivery. The course moves beyond theory and supports participants to put learning into practice within the realities of school life.
Why this course is important
RSE now covers subjects that are personal, complex and sometimes emotionally charged, yet teachers often have limited time and few opportunities to explore these topics in depth. Many practitioners report concern about causing distress, opening conversations they feel unprepared to manage, or responding to challenging views in ways that keep young people safe.
A trauma-sensitive approach supports teachers to understand how all kinds of past experiences, we may not be aware of, could be impacting our learner’s engagement with RSE.
This course also shows how being trauma-sensitive also requires awareness of our own personal values, assumptions and sensitivities, as these influence how topics are framed and discussed. It supports stronger foundations for safer RSE and helps schools build practice that protects wellbeing while supporting inclusion and access to learning.
Who this course is for
This 'Developing Expert Practice’ course is designed for established RSE and PSHE teachers and subject leads who already deliver RSE and want to develop their practice further. It is also suited to those with responsibility for curriculum quality, consistency and staff support, and for practitioners who want to lead trauma-sensitive RSE across their setting. Participants are expected to have prior experience of teaching RSE and a working understanding of statutory requirements.

How to take part
This is small group, interactive one day course is online via Zoom, with two short breaks in the morning and afternoon session and a break for lunch.
