Young people consistently tell us they value opportunities to discuss relationships and sexuality in non-judgemental spaces where they can ask questions. They also emphasise the importance of educators feeling confident in addressing complex and sensitive RSHE topics (SEF, 2025). This session will explore how educators can approach discussions about pornography with greater confidence, sensitivity and self-awareness.
Drawing on her research into young people's experiences of sexual content online, Dr Giselle Woodley, Research Fellow at Edith Cowan University, Australia will share the diverse perspectives highlighted by participants and introduce the reflexivity framework used by researchers to examine how their own values influenced the research process. Through guided reflection and discussion, participants will consider how reflexive practice can strengthen their ability to engage learners in thoughtful, inclusive and effective conversations about pornography and related RSHE topics.
This session will cover:
- What research tells us about young people's experiences of pornography.
- Why reflexivity matters in RSHE facilitation.
- How a reflexivity framework was developed through pornography research, and how educators can build reflexivity into their own practice.
- Opportunities to reflect on our own backgrounds and views impact on our delivery education around pornography.
