Members' Event: FGM Education in Primary School Communities

Education about Female genital mutilation (FGM) plays a crucial role in safeguarding. It is part of the secondary RSHE curriculum, but as FGM can happen at any stage in life, and is most common between the ages of 5 and 10 years old, primary schools need to consider how to approach this as a community.

ForwardUK  is an African women-led organisation working to end violence against women and girls. They will guide us through navigating this sensitive topic, drawing on 40 years of experience educating, empowering and supporting communities affected by or at risk of FGM. Together, we will explore practical strategies for discussing FGM with confidence and care from primary, while recognising the importance of respecting the diverse cultural backgrounds of families and communities. We will also consider how to engage parents and carers in constructive, sensitive conversations that help build understanding and trust, informed by Forward UK's extensive work with schools and communities.

 This session will cover:

  • How educators  can approach this subject in a culturally sensitive way informed by the stories told through ForwardUK's participatory research and programme work.

  • Ways to approach this topic with parents and carers.

  • How to approach FGM education with primary-age children, as part of a protective and preventative safeguarding approach.

  • What the new RSHE guidance says in relation to FGM, how it intersects with other areas of the RSHE curriculum and what educators should teach.
