Foundation level course:
This course will help visiting RSE providers to identify ways they can make their RSE more accessible for all learners and work in partnership with schools to increase the outcomes and effectiveness of their sessions. It will give visiting specialists an overview of different kinds of learning needs and disabilities, key issues facing schools, ways to approach key topics and strategies to improve communication and engagement with sessions.
Why this course is important
As schools are increasingly expected to deliver a wide range of complex and sensitive topics in RSE, many utilise visiting educators to support or add value to their provision. However, visiting educators are often asked to work with groups of learners whose backgrounds, experiences, levels of understanding and additional needs may be unfamiliar to them. This creates a challenge: how can visiting educators ensure their sessions are accessible, inclusive and effective, while avoiding unintentional confusion, exclusion or harm? This is particularly important for learners with SEND, who are more vulnerable to bullying, abuse, social isolation and exploitation, and who may not always have access to information presented in ways they can understand. Understanding the fundamentals of developing accessible RSE for young people with SEND will not only improve sessions for these learners but will improve access and inclusion for all.
Who this course is for
External specialist RSE educators, working for charities, local authorities or other organisations, that visit schools and specialist settings to deliver RSE sessions in special or specialist settings.
If you're a visiting educator and you're not a SEND specialist, you need to be asking whether your support is genuinely appropriate, and how to adapt your approach so it adds real value rather than becoming a tick box. This course does exactly that. It gives you the context and the practical skills to work out whether SEND specific provision is for you, and how to make it work.

This is small group, interactive course is online via Zoom, split into three parts with two short breaks.
