Event: Breaking barriers: learning to use pharmacies

Do you know what services young people can access from pharmacies? Are you prepared to introduce this new area of RSHE from September 2026?

This members’ event explores the growing role of community pharmacies in supporting young people’s health and wellbeing. With the role of pharmacies now included in statutory RSHE guidance, this session will help you introduce this topic with clarity and confidence.

Led by expert pharmacist, Patricia Ojo, with over 25 years' experience in primary care, including community pharmacy, general practice and wider clinical services, you’ll gain real-world insight into what pharmacies offer, how they are accessed, and how to build young people’s confidence to use them for a range of services, including sexual health. You’ll also gain understanding on how pharmacy access can help address inequalities.

Part of our Breaking Barriers series, this session, chaired by Alison Hadley OBE, focuses on strengthening links between education and local health services.

This session will cover:

  • Why community pharmacy matters for young people today

  • Key services offered, including contraception and sexual health support

  • How confidentiality works in practice

  • Common barriers, such as concerns about privacy, and how to reduce them

  • Supporting marginalised young people

  • The role of the educator vs the clinician

What you'll take away from this event:

  • Identify key services pharmacies provide for young people, including contraception, emergency contraception, and sexual health support.

  • Understand how confidentiality works in a pharmacy setting and be able to confidently communicate this with young people.

  • Recognise common barriers to accessing pharmacy services and apply practical strategies to reduce these both in the classroom and in the community.
