Summer Members' Event - Stories of success, with RSE challenges in common

Sex Education Forum plays a unique role in convening stakeholders working for effective relationships and sex education (RSE) provision in England. Together with our partners, we played a crucial role in the successful campaign for legislation (secured in 2017) that made RSE mandatory in all schools in England.

Young people are starting to benefit from this protective curriculum, with 50% saying their RSE is ‘good’ or ‘very good’ in our poll of 16 and 17 years olds earlier this year. Our annual polling shows that RSE satisfaction amongst young people has improved year on year since 2021.

However, over the past couple of years, there have been global and national challenges to RSE / comprehensive sexuality education (CSE). Challenge to progress with the implementation of comprehensive, inclusive RSE is a common experience internationally.

Our summer members’ event will bring together:

  • Case-studies of countries that have moved through periods of turbulence and have learning to share.
  • Global perspectives on the current challenges and strategies for success
  • The experiences of young people who are actively campaigning for extensions to RSE in England

This, we hope, will support stakeholders in England (including schools, policy-makers, civil society organisations and researchers) with a wider global perspective and finding strategies that may be applicable in different contexts.

The event aims to be beneficial for all involved, with a spirit of mutual learning, and a shared ambition for high quality, effective and inclusive RSE for all children and young people.

Guest speakers include:

  • Section of Health & Education, UNESCO
  • Tânia Mendes, Brand and communications, Global Partnership Forum on CSE, UNESCO
  • Likho Bottoman, Director: Social Cohesion and Equity in Education, Department of Basic Education, Government of South Africa
  • Representatives of Rutgers, The Netherlands
  • Representatives from Northern Ireland
  • Ithar Ghalifa and Faustine Petron (Founder), Make it Mandatory
